The journey of a toastmaster

Joining Toastmasters International has been one of the most fulfilling journeys I have ever embarked upon — and trust me, I did not see that coming.
When I first stepped through the door, I genuinely thought it would be a walk in the park. After all, I had been speaking my whole life. What more was there to learn? Quite a lot, as it turned out. And that, perhaps, was the first and most humbling lesson Toastmasters offered me: that growth has no expiry date, and learning is always available to those willing to show up for it.
I still remember my first few meetings at the ICG Toastmasters Club. I walked in with quiet confidence and left with wide eyes. The command of language, the poise, the sheer elegance with which members communicated — it was nothing short of breathtaking. My inner voice was like: “WOW… and here I was thinking I had already achieved it all.” Spoiler: I had barely even begun.
Joining ICG was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Something extraordinary happens in that room on Thursday evenings. You are quite literally transported — to a space where learning is not just encouraged, it is lived. Where near-strangers will pause after your speech and offer you the kind of specific, thoughtful feedback that helps you see yourself more clearly. Where your mentor does not mould you in their own image, but instead holds your hand while you find your way into your own — with eloquence, confidence, and a style that is unmistakably yours. And where friends have you back truly, when you are around or not.
With the constant guidance of my mentor, I achieved more than I had expected — not just as a Toastmaster, but as a person. My confidence, both personally and professionally, reached an all-time high. The tools I gained in those meetings followed me into every corner of my life, giving me an edge that no classroom had ever quite managed.
“Growth has no expiry date, and learning is always available to those willing to show up for it.”
Carrying all of that growth with me, and inspired by what being a Toastmaster had done for my own world, a group of us decided to bring something similar closer to home — to our beautiful village of Calangute. What began as a conversation between friends slowly grew into something far greater, as strangers joined hands with a shared vision and the willingness to build something meaningful together.
And build we did. We are proud to have celebrated our Paper Anniversary, with members excelling at contests right up to the Division level and achieving remarkable milestones in their educational journeys. Our meetings at the beach, our coffee catch-ups, and our movie nights have woven us into something beyond a club — a community. One where help is just a call away, where every win is celebrated, and where the relationships formed inside the meeting room flow naturally and warmly beyond it.
Being a Toastmaster is unlike any other experience I can put into words — though I am certainly getting better at trying. If you have ever wanted to communicate with more clarity, more confidence, more ‘you’ — I urge you to take that step. Walk into a meeting. Stay for the magic. And let the journey begin.
